How Do Dental Crowns Work?

A dental crown is meant to restore a natural tooth by improving its strength and durability while also improving its appearance. These restorations are also referred to as “dental caps” as they cover the entire visible structure to protect the tooth enamel. Once they’re cemented in place, you’ll simply have to practice good oral hygiene every day and visit our office every six months to keep them in pristine condition.

How Are Same-Day Dental Crowns Made?

>

As with traditional crowns, the first step is to remove a small amount of enamel from the tooth so that a restoration will fit. Then, we will scan your mouth to create a digital impression. Our E4D system will use these scans to design the crown and create it out of zirconia or Emax materials. Even though they’re made in less than a day, same-day crowns are on par with normal crowns when it comes to strength and their expected lifespan.

Zirconia Same-Day Crowns

Zirconia offers superior strength and durability for dental crowns. It is much stronger than other restoration materials, able to withstand wear and tear without chipping, and can tolerate the forces of bruxism much better in the long term.

Thanks to newer monolithic zirconia (single, solid blocks of zirconia), our zirconia crowns are nearly unbreakable. Our zirconia crowns are strong enough to hold up even in the posterior area of the mouth – where bite forces are much stronger. Typically, zirconia crowns can only be made at a specialized dental laboratory with industrial-quality milling machines. This process can take weeks or even months for the patient to achieve the results they are looking for in both fit and color.

Using state-of-the-art digital dental technology, industrial milling equipment, and leveraging the most recent advances in furnaces allows the doctors at Ocean Oaks Dental Group of Vero Beach to be able to provide a unique same-day zirconia crown solution to meet your dental needs. Ask us about getting your new zirconia tooth in just one day!

Emax Same-Day Crowns

Made from a lithium disilicate material—basically a type of ceramic—Emax same-day crowns match the durability of porcelain fused to metal without sacrificing the tooth’s appearance. In fact, Emax crowns are highly sought after for their realistic translucency and minimal impact to the tooth. Compared to other types of dental crown ceramics, Emax tends to preserve more healthy tooth structure, which means you keep as much of your natural tooth as possible.

Same-Day Dental Crowns FAQs

The idea of having a dental crown made and placed in just one appointment can be an exciting one. You’re likely to have questions about how the process works as well as what you can do to make sure that your crown lasts as long as possible once it’s in place. Below are some common questions our patients ask about our same-day dental crowns; please reach out to us if there’s anything else you want to know.

Are Same-Day Crowns Permanent?

Much like their traditional counterparts, same-day crowns are only expected to last for so long. Their lifespan can be anywhere between 5 to 15 years. You can get more mileage out of your crown by taking excellent care of it; make sure that you’re practicing good oral hygiene every day, and don’t forget to wear a mouthguard to protect your restoration (and the rest of your smile) when playing sports.

Even though the actual crown isn’t permanent, placing it is an irreversible procedure that involves removing enamel from your tooth. Enamel doesn’t have any living cells, so it can’t grow back; as such, once the procedure is complete, the tooth will always need to be covered with a restoration.

How Will You Know When a Dental Crown Needs to Be Replaced?

It’s ultimately up to your dentist to decide whether or not it’s time to replace a crown. Some warning signs that it’s time to get a new restoration might include:

  • Pain in the tooth under the crown, which might be due to untreated decay.
  • An unstable or loose crown.
  • Chips and stains that are hurting your self-confidence.

Call us immediately if you think your crown is close to the end of its lifespan.

Do Same-Day Crowns Feel Natural?

It will take a little bit of time to get used to the presence of a crown in your mouth, but many people find that it starts to feel more and more natural after just a few days of use. The crown will be very carefully customized so that it fits as comfortably as possible in your mouth. If you run your tongue across your teeth, the crown might feel slightly different due to the material it’s made of, but aside from that, it generally shouldn’t be noticeable. Some patients even temporarily forget that they even have crowns.

Can Same-Day Dental Crowns Be Whitened?

It can be tempting to try and remove stains from your crown with a whitening procedure, but this is not a viable option. Tooth enamel has small openings that allow bleaching gels to enter and remove staining particles; the materials used to make dental crowns have no such openings and thus cannot be whitened the same way. As such, when there’s a stain on your crown, the only option for getting rid of it is to replace the restoration altogether.
